There should be a bar that tells you if your bid will be successful or not.
From memory I think it's around $550 to $750

Recently I was successful on all sectors I applied for at the lowest possible bid cost. Flights were reasonably loaded according to expert flyer. Putting a bid in that is well in the 'red' zone seems a little risky, but I guess that is the gamble.
I mentioned this the other day - a colleauge of mine called the call centre with a query about the bidding process, and they offered him an on-the-spot upgrade for slightly less than the bid costs. I did try this approach without any success, but it may be down to who you speak to. Worth a try, perhaps....
