Hi all,
I have a trip coming up that's a mix of Qantas for Mel-Syd and then onwards to US with United. (If Qantas wouldn't be 1.5x of United's costs they could have got the whole trip ...)
It's booked through a Business travel agency and Qantas knows the whole itinerary and it's even visible in my QF account. Can/will they tag my bags for the whole journey, or if usually not is there anything I can do to convince them to be nice and do it? I'd hate to pick up bags in the morning in Syd, and then check in again with United ...
Thanks all

Don't think it'll be tagged through, sorry.

It depends if Qantas have an arrangement, or if it is on the same ticket or possibly itinerary as it is on your booking. Qantas do use united in the US but worth checking with your travel agent. In Melbourne it is easy to pick your bags up and take them upstairs. As it is on your qantas itinerary they may book it through though.

Qantas and UA definitely have an interline agreement (unless it was another victim of Covid), and UA flights occasionally come up as connection options from Qantas transpacific flights (e.g. to Mexico) on the QF website. If your flights are all on the one ticket/PNR, your bags should be booked all the way through.

So, I've done the trip and yes, Qantas does everything, from check-in over boarding pass print & US-formalities (Covid etc.) and luggage check-through for United. So that was the very convenient part.
If Sydney wouldn't be such a big f... mess with departure for international travels and 2+ hr security wait time this would have actually been a nice trip...
