Is Qantas price gouging on International connections?

I often get connecting flights from MEL-SYD to connect to international services operating ex-SYD. The connecting domestic sectors in Business are usually added onto the international fare for circa $100 or so as a reflection of the airport taxes of the extra 2 sectors from/to MEL.

Last few flights however in long haul First Class ex-SYD, I noticed that QF are now charging full fare Business between SYD-MEL, compared to previously adding on those connecting domestic legs from any east coats port for a nominal fee. No change to prior routings, and connections are <24hrs, yet Qantas are now charging the full Business fare on the domestic connection. Anybody else noticing that?

Last few flights I have just booked ex-SYD to avoid the unreasonably high fares MEL-SYD, and used points for the domestic connections, then linked the bookings. Seems like a sleight of hand change to the way they always used to treat connecting flights from any east coast port, and if they persist in this apparent price gouging, then they will lose another loyal paying customer to competitors. I asked the Call Centre, and they said "they had started noticing that also, which didn't seem fair compared to the way they have previously approached east coast connections fare pricing, and given the current long haul pricing in general". Same thing happening when connecting to the SYD-CHC Emirates A380 codeshare flights.

$27k return F to LAX, yet 'only' $15k return to LHR for a lot more flying time, so they clearly have a lot of profit built into LAX.
