Why can't Qantas match Etihad's new facility which enables flyers to preclear the U.S. Customs and Border Protection formalities before boarding their flights from Abu Dhabi?

Upon arrival in the U.S.A, Etihad passengers are treated as though they are domestic arrivals.

This means shorter connection times are possible for onward flights in the U.S., with your luggage arriving to the final destination.

Is this just another example of the failings of Qantas under Joyce?

Surely, if the UAE can pull this off, Qantas should have been able to do it for Australian passengers?

It's not QF's issue. It's a government issue. Both the UAE government and Emirate of Abu Dhabi Government take a long term economic vision for development (the UAE 2021 plan and Abu Dhabi 2030 plan). They are smart, determined, and cashed up.

Our governments are short term, instrospective, negative.

Go read the documents above (they're available online) and you'll quickly see how totally devoid of political leadership we are in Australia (on both sides but especially the Lib/Nats).

Yes, let's blame Qantas for everything!  As PLATY has mentioned it is a Government issue... whilst pre-clear would be nice, an easier and cheaper option would be access to the US Global Entry program. This is something we should have insisted on in exchange for giving US Citizens access to smartgate.

Anyway, on pre-clearance, does anyone know if USCBP has axed the Shannon pre-clearance that the BA A318's were using LCY-JFK?

I am still completely annoyed by both sides of govt with their inaction and non-recognition to the benefits of Aussie BTs accessing the Global Entry program. We were told that we'd have access a year ago... and while Global Entry users can use Smartgate, we're still stuck with the shackles of ESTA!

hutch: Dublin is set to receive pre-clearance too, so I'd be surprised if Shannon was axed!

maybe '521303' should ask why VIRGIN AUSTRALIA  (a very close 'partner' of ETIHAD)  don't offer this service as well !!! but then i suppose 'ignorance is bliss'
