I understand that you cannot use QFF points to upgrade on any flight not operated and marketed by QF. You can use the points to redeem for an award seat but that's it.

From oneworld's website:
Can I use my frequent flyer points/miles to upgrade within oneworld?
Most of our member airlines allow customers of their frequent flyer programme to upgrade on their own flights. However, none presently offer upgrade awards on flights operated by other oneworld members.

Just to reiterate what Watson374's stated - From the Qantas website:
"Flight Upgrade Awards can only be redeemed on flights that are operated by Qantas with a QF flight number."

While correct for Qantas - you can only upgrade Qantas ticketed, Qantas metal,
the oneworld website is wrong for American Airlines AAdvantage - where you can upgrade on AA, BA and IB

and believe reverse is true for BA Avios members

I am travelling on CX and rang QF re using QF FF points to upgrade on a CX flight.
The answer was NO, only on QF metal (or carbon on a 787)
