Best-value buying airline miles for Trans-Tasman and South East Asia?

Hi all! Long time reader, first time poster :-)

With all these mileage puchasing deals, who is the better hand with miles bookings Trans-Tasman and Medium Haul to South East Asia? The actual cost of the flight is more important to me than flying J over Y.

This article indicates American' AAdvantage is best for QF to south-east Asia, but you also need to search for articles on other options such as Avianca for Star Alliance (which would cover Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand).
