Yep, the word is they are leasing 5 757's from a Chinese carrier Shanghai Airlines.

How do they expect to fill a clapped up old 757 when the couldnt fill an A320?

The 757s have 175-seats, 21 more than the A320 that used to go via Darwin.

I believe PNG airlines fly a leased 757 from Iceland Air into BNE. As well Tasman cargo operate a 757 from YSSY to NZ.

Yes.I can't help thinking though if the then Domestic Carriers had gone 757 instead of waiting for the A320 Would things have been any different.

I don't think so. I would argue that the 757 doesn't really offer an Australian domestic carrier anything worthwhile, viewed within the context of the last 15 years or so.
Off the top of my head, the only route it would be able to do that the A320 family of widebodies couldn't would probably be PER-AKL.

Brisbane to Manila vv. - 3 DIRECT services and 4 services via Darwin
Perth to Manila vv. - 4 DIRECT services and 3 services via Darwin
Melbourne to Manila vv. - DAILY DIRECT services
Sydney to Manila vv. - DAILY DIRECT services
Darwin to Manila vv. - DAILY DIRECT services
BNE/PER/DRW flights to be operated by B757
MEL/SYD flights to be operated by A343
