I flew United Airlines from Michigan to LAX, Air new zealand from LAX to New Zealand and will fly ANZ back to LAX but am flying Delta back to Michigan.

I flew United Airlines from Michigan to LAX, Air new zealand from LAX to New Zealand and will fly ANZ back to LAX but am flying Delta back to Michigan. I want to change my Delta segments and according to my travel agent I can't change my original destination and would have to buy a second ticket. My original ticket was purchased through that travel agency as one. Can I go through delta to get it changed? Wouldn't it have been a one way ticket anyways since Delta is not affiliated with star alliance?
