Getting frequent flyer points for filling up at the pump has now become a battlefield for Qantas (Caltex) and Virgin Australia (BP) to slug it out. Preferences?

Can't say until I know the earn rate for Virgin/BP.

With most Caltex-owned stores now surcharging for AMEX and Diners Club credit cards (which is your double-dip to frequent flyer points) and the majority of BPs not applying a similar surcharge, I see the Velocity+BP option as quite an attractive one if the earning rate is competitive.

(To be clear, Woolworths-owned 'Woolworths Caltex' outlets have no credit card surcharges, although most Caltex-owned 'Caltex Woolworths' stores now surcharge for AMEX and Diners.)

With Caltex if depends if you value the points or the discount. Until Velocity and BP make the points earning rate known, we have no idea how the offer compares.

Petrol prices and frequent flyer points are two areas in which people's usual ability to do mental arithmetic and compute costs vs benefits go straight out the window.

Two frequent flyer points per litre? So if I buy a full tank, I get points worth... about a dollar? Whoop de doo. I mean, hey, I'll take the points if I happen to be at the appropriate station, but I'd be stupid to go out of my way to get 'em.

I must admit I won't change my behaviour here. I've been filling up exclusively at BP for many years now, the only difference to me will be now I'll get a few points for it.
