Toss a coin I think. I'm going in May/June, outbound is refurb and return from JNB is old.

Between 14 Dec - 14 Jan SYD-JNB was operated by a refurb'd plane every day except for 5 days. Previously, this route operated on non-refurb's at a much higher ratio whenever i've looked at it.
That of course provides no guarantees... expect the worse and hope for the best.

Accept that it will be old and have a good surprise if it new. Far better then other way around.
