If I want to fly Japan airline to NRT from MEL I need to tansit in sydney. Can I check my baggage all the way to NRT when I check in in MEL?

Also on the return, do I need to go through custom clearance in SYD then re-check in at SYD for the SYD-MEL flight?

Thanks guys

It may depend on the airline but VA may do it (JL is not a partner) and QF will as both are Oneworld member airlines. Not sure about JQ or TT but I think that is unlikely.

I think you will need to re-check on the way back yes, can anyone confirm??

On your return flight you must re-check in SYD under Australian law.

Once a while ago I been fooled by ground stuff that they can check baggage directly to Melbourne and I will not need to collect it in Sydney. Wrong! Even if they check your baggage to Melbourne you have to collect your baggage in Sydney, pass passport control and customs and go to domestic terminal to continue your flight

If your bags are tagged through from Tokyo to Melbourne, you will collect them in Sydney to clear Customs, and then drop them back off at the domestic transfer counter straight after.
