"Value" can come through a few factors, such as

  • exchange rates (which in my experience vary slightly between cards, from one currency to another)
  • range of currencies (pretty much the same but only Velocity offers the SA Rand while only Qantas has the UAE Dirham)
  • points earning (same for both cards: 1 point/$1 overseas, 1 point/$2 in Australia)
  • any fees (eg cash withdrawal overseas, need to compare both)
  • core features (pretty much the same, although I do like the Velocity card's ability to generate several one-off 'virtual card numbers' for online shopping)

So I'd suggest you think on which of these is most relevant to you and then see how the cards compare for your needs.

'Value' wise I would also look at the Citibank Plus card.

You can't lockin rates but equally you don't end up paying the 3-5% spread

I agree with moa999 - if you are looking for value then move away from travel cards.

When travelling I use my Citibank Plus card at ATMs or BankWest Breeze platinum credit card for larger purchases.

However, saying that, the current $30 discount on a foreign currency card with Travelex makes it quite appealing. If you purchase $1000 AUD worth of currency then closes the spread by 3%.
