Qantas domestic classic upgrade won't clear when there are still reward seats available?

Hi everyone,

I know many of you here are experts at this, so I would just like to find out if my understanding about Qantas domestic upgrade is correct or if they have changed the rules since. My understanding about Qantas domestic classic upgrade is that if there are business reward seats available to book with points, then an upgrade request should confirm instantly. I have used this rule in the past to "check" for upgrade availability and it has served me well, until this time.

I have booked 2 economy seats SYD-MEL on an A330 and I could see that there are business reward seats available for 2 so by my past experience the upgrade request should be confirmed instantly however, it just wouldn't clear this time. I double checked a day later and there are still business reward seats available for at least 2 people if I wanted to book them outright with points. So I don't know if Qantas has changed its rules, or is it related to the A330, or some other system issue, as interestingly when I check expert flyer, it is showing no business reward availability (though I know a higher status will sometimes have access to reward availability not shown on expert flyer).

Has anyone had this experience lately?

Many thanks.

This is a problem that has happened on and off over the years. You can ring QFF and see if they can push it through, or remove the request and resubmit it.

Brinkers is correct, this is a problem that has occurred for me on a number of occasions. It can sometimes occur if you try to get the upgrade too soon after you have purchased the ticket online. I just ring QANTAS and explain the issue and they have given me the instant upgrade every time. Enjoy the trip

Thank you for your replies. By this morning there are no longer any business reward seats for my flight, I did call Qantas nonetheless and they confirmed that there were no seats. So perhaps they were those "phantom reward seats" that I have read people talk sometimes about in forums? Anyway I have put in an upgrade request and we will just have to wait and see.

Really appreciate your replies and tips.

Hopefully you get it. I had the same experience as described by mern and brinkers above. I requested an upgrade immediately after booking and after several days it still hadn't cleared despite reward seats being available.

Chris Chamberlain of this site advised me to cancel the upgrade request and re-request it. I did this and it cleared immediately :)

So now i wait a little before requesting the upgrade.
