So an upgrade from economy award to business costs SYD-LAX costs 100k, (plus the 45k paid for the economy seat), meanwhile booking a business award would only be 96k. That seems like incredibly poor value.

If you arrive from Vancouver you'll have gone through US pre-clearance and won't have to clear immigration/customs when you arrive into Terminal 2. If your bags are checked through you can remain post-security and get the airside shuttle to TBIT.

It's not so much a hoax, as a failure to read the terms and conditions. Whilst it may be frustrating that your assumptions were incorrect, neither Qantas or AmEx are at fault. The terms and conditions are quite clear when they state that the flights must be booked on 'qantas.com.au', when booking...

I've had similar experiences with the multiple flights this year. The QFF service centre have also been fairly difficult. After the outbound flight for a return trip posted as an 'award flight' I emailed the boarding passes and itinerary that showed the Plus bundles. They then credited the points...
