Cathay Pacific to buy Airbus A321neo jets in US$4.1 billion order

Cathay Pacific will upgrade and expand the fleet of its affiliate Cathay Dragon with an order for 32 Airbus A321neo jets.

The jets, scheduled to be delivered between 2020 and 2023, will also mark the debut of an all-new regional business class seat – although this is expected to be a more conventional recliner than a lie-flat bed.

The new aircraft will replace Cathay Dragon’s 15 A320s and eight A321s, the airline said in a statement separately. Besides the 23 single-aisle jets, it also operates 24 wide-body A330s, serving 56 destinations in Asia.

“The substantial investment we are making in new aircraft underlines our confidence in the future of the Cathay Pacific Group, as well as our commitment to bolstering Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s largest international aviation hub,” Chief Executive Officer Rupert Hogg said in the statement.

The airline, which last week reported its worst half-year loss in at least two decades, is in the midst of a corporate revamp that includes job cuts and measures to improve services.

This move seems desperate in view of the airline's debt exposure. But if the key investors are willing to give their support then it is growth rather than profiability that counts.

A reduced model range will certainly help with servicing. IndiGo in India is, in my mind at least, a great example.

Probably have no choice to make an order with some of their 320s being 20+ years old when this order is delivered.

It makes sense, since they operate All Airbus aircraft and A321NEO would be perfect for their trans-asia routes.

It would definitely helps the traffic from Hong Kong to smaller cities across asia. And don't even think about B797. It's too big for them.

Interesting as SQ is replacing 320s with 737 on its daughter fleet of silkair. Maybe the once all Boeing Cathay will be all Airbus

1st of all, CX hv never been "all Boeing" per actual historical facts.  Before the 1st Airbus(a 342) was delivered to CX circa 1993, they still had a bunch of Lockheed L1011 Tristars.  2ndly, to be all Airbus, CX need to do both of the followings even if we ignore their Boeing freighter fleet:

a) Get rid of all 777 x70 in current fleet in which the majority(75%+) are 10yrs old or younger.  To put such mammoth task into perspective, the entire QF+JQ widebody fleet today contains only 61 frames.

b) Get rid of their firm order for 779 x21(+options) which won't arrive until 2021 and expected to stay in CX fleet for @ least 20yrs.

As a result, it's a pretty safe bet that CX won't be all Airbus until @ least 2040 per current fleet plan trajectory.

More narrow seats on CX...    Please listen to me CX...  Your uncomfortable slim-line seats is the very reason I won't be flying your airline again.    They feel like sitting on an iron board, making the bum go numb....  for 15 or 16 hours from HKG to YYZ.    And if that isn't bad enough, you plan to make them more slim.     Obviously you are looking at capacity rather than basic human comfort.     Don't count me in on flying your airline again until you improve your seating comfort.   Return to better comfortable seats, and for goodness sake, get rid of those slim line ironing boards of seats.
