Just my interpretation of the future of QANTAS and Australian Travel (Armchair Chairman) –

The Australian Government must repeal the whole QANTAS Sales Act (you can be half pregnant);

• QANTAS is a lame duck now, if the Australian Government only amends to retain 49% ownership, no one will buy it and why would they, it comes with too much Union baggage and out date management practices and an overburden of Employee benefits;

Thanks to the Unions, which are totally archaic and out of touch with today’s markets (apologies that’s my HR rant).

• No carrier is interested in the removal of the 35% cap, if a carrier was interested they would want the whole identity to do as they want;

• We are watching an airline with aging planes, get older, and a company which is in no way preparing for the future 10 – 15 years or longer;

• The value in QANTAS is, QFF, Landing Slots and Infrastructure;

Just putting it out there –

Emirates futuristic global plan (or any other carrier who could do it) –

• Qantas is taken over outright;

• Qantas International is closed (as wages are too high), A380 converted to Emirates, all other planes sold off as scrap;

• Catering stays (generally low wages);

• All fleet maintenance is sent to Asia;

• Qantas domestic is closed (as wages are too high), younger fleet sent to Jetstar;

• Jetstar becomes Australian domestic airline and low cost Asia, Jetstar is headquarters in Darwin / Cairns as a centralised site;

• Emirates develop trans global A380 routes using QF slots (past / present) –

1. DXB – SYD – LAX – JFK – DXB

2. DXB – AKL - MEL – SCL – EZE – DXB

3. DXB – SIN – BNE – SFO – FRA – DXB

4. PER – JNB – EZE – SCL – ALK – PER

5. DXB – SYD – DFW – LHR – DXB

(The list is endless)

• Emirates relocates a fleet of 777 to Australian Capitals (PER / ADL / MEL / SYD / BNE) and competes head to head with CX/SQ/MH to Asia and Europe;

• Emirates lets Virgin and Jetstar fight it out over the domestic market;

That’s my long term view, thanks for reading.

My god I hope your interpretation never comes to fruition.

Agree with bits, but this is too ideological, simplistic, and does not deal with facts. (Wait, do you work for Tony Abbott?)

Yes unions are bad, does that necessarily mean QF domestic is unprofitable?

Clearly not all maintenance should be done in Asia, some should be done where its cheaper, but regular needs to be done where the plane is, not flown to China just for quick maintenance.

What is the purpose of these trans global A380 routes? So you can fly around the world in 80 hours? The list is endless, but the economic rationale ends very quickly.
