Over the years I've accumulated quite a few American Airlines FF points. They're set to expire on Oct 6, 2016. I don't have any chance to use them before then and for a while afterwards due to work commitments etc. I live in Perth and also don't have any chance to get another AA flight short term to extend their life. Anyone know the best strategy to extend the life of those points? Specifically, if I "buy" some more AA points, will that extend the life of the existing points? Anyone know or have ideas?

can you transfer them to a "family member" and then transfer them back when you have taken another AA flight?

Qantas flight credited to AA, hotel credit to AA, purchase through the linked mall. Plenty of ways to earn a few points

You should be redeeming them before March 22nd when they raise their redemption rates!

^^ Great advice. You don't have to redeem them on AA - living in Perth, you might be able to find a seat on one of Qantas' Singapore flights, or to Abu Dhabi/Doha/Europe with AA partners Etihad or Qatar... or on Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong, or across Australia. You can usually book flights about 11 months in advance, so even if you're not flying before March 22, you can still book travel now for flights after that date at the lower rates.
