I've never used my points and looking to use them on a flight SYD - LON for me and my partner. I will be paying for business class flights and using points to upgrade to first.
From my reading, I can't figure out if there is a way to guarantee upgraded? I'm only gold so I understand platinum get preference.
I was wondering whether there was a way to guarantee the upgrades even if it means using more points?
Nope! No guarantees, you'll simply find out by text and via your online account a couple of days before your flight (its a specific number of hours, I forget how many). P and P1 obviously get preference but you can give expertflyer a look to check loadings for your flight and get a vague idea of probability.
Hi Carl – as others here have indicated, Qantas offers no way to lock down that upgrade. But fingers crossed that it comes through for you, as it's a great way to fly – I do Sydney-London in Qantas business class a few times each year and always apply for an upgrade, and most of the time it comes through, even if sometimes I get the happy 'upgrade successful' SMS just days before I fly.
Most times I fly f on QF the cabin is Cl p1 or p. The loads are rarely gold or silver. Not impossible but rare. Look in the galley the crew have a printout of names and status. Also upgrading 2 pax is harder
You would be better buying decent j product as QF on a380 is no longer competitive. Look at sq, cx,AF ( on new product) ey or perhaps Qatar if the sort their issues

The upgrade may come through as late as at the gate as you board. It's a lottery!

To apply for an upgrade as late as at the gate you need to be the only passenger on a booking I think.
