Good morning. I have just booked business class redemption flt QF64 on Mar 10 2018 and on selecting seat found that its the old un-referbished 'plane.
And BTW. I couldnt get a seat in the lower old first section either!

I flew back on the non-refurbished plane on this Tuesday night. Managed to score a seat in the old F section up front luckily (Platinum, points upgrade). Advantage was the extra, roomier toilets and uncramped feel up the front but the IFE really old cf the other versions. Not sure how much longer the plane is scheduled to be around for. Had one of the other 747s on flight from Sydney.

The 744 (QF64) on 10 March is the old unrefurbished, i.e. the one with old F in the front of the plane. I am surprised that you as a QF Plat cannot book the old F class seats or the exit rows, as I have no problem in doing so (including rows 1 and 2 - see below -and exit rows other than those on the lower deck) in a dummy booking in Amadeus CRS (being ex QF Plat/LT Gold, but now a OW Emerald/AY Plat member) .

No refurb scheduled, the old-First Cabin has recently had a refresh.

OP, you may find that your FF number hasn't attached itself properly to your booking, hence why you don't have a large selection of seats for selection. As you have done a phone call should fix it. Do note that as the flight as ~6 months away, there is plenty of time for OEB to get moved off the flight for that day.
