Hong Kong Airlines today announced that it will suspend its services to Gold Coast and Cairns from 28 October 2018, due to its changing business strategy in the Australian market.

The last Hong Kong Airlines flight from Hong Kong to Gold Coast and Cairns will be HX015 on 27 October 2018, while the last flight from Gold Coast and Cairns to Hong Kong will be HX016 on 28 October 2018.

Another blow for Virgin Australia - the new partner is shutting down their own flight to Australia.

Probably the slots may be used for BNE-HKG on VA metal instead? Noted the HX HKG-CNS-OOL-HKG varied between 2-4x weekly depending on season.

Cairns needs to sort out direct routes to be successful in the future, this going via OOL is a pain regardless of which direction, Cairns also needs to provide some decent lounge options if it is going to chase full service airlines with business class offering, the current Reef Lounge is poor and not up to domestic lounge quality let alone business class.
