I'm now trying to book two business class awards from Melbourne to Hong Kong after Christmas, and all flights (except SQ248, which started from Wellington and features crappy angled-flat seat) says it's on "Waitlist". In this instance, how much chance the waitlist will clear?
I booked last minute wait list from a Brisbane to Simgapore return. The leg going over was confirmed 12 hours prior. The leg home I was confirmed 6 hours prior.
In a similar position - is it possible to to waitlist the desired business seat and then book an economy award? Hopefully then change once the waitlist clears. I’m flexible in dates, but can’t really wait until a few hours before the flight for a confirmation (without a backup).

Yes, it's possible to do that. In my case, I waitlisted for my preferred reward around Christmas this year, then booked a 2nd-choice flight.
Just last week, some 7 months early, the waitlist for my preferred flight cleared and I switched for a $34 (US$25) change fee per person.

Try ringing an say "you are checking on the progress of a wait list". I have found that within a day i get a confirmation. Might depend on your status. I was PPS at the time (now Gold which has no benefits)

Well, I might even try depart on Christmas day, in that instance, is waitlist going to be cleared easily?
