Probably a silly question, have anyone been upgraded from Y to PE or J once onboard the plane?

It's not at all a silly question, Tezza. I've been upgraded with Qantas twice from economy to business class while on the plane, both times with a full economy cabin and because of a faulty seat. The first time was when my economy seat was faulty, IFE didn't work, being Platinum they bumped me into business class. The second time the seat of another passenger was faulty, they must have checked the manifest and due to my status they came to me and asked if I'd mind swapping seats, which meant letting the other passenger have my seat while I got bumped up.

I presume your talking international travel due to PE.....
My sisters were upgraded from PE to Business on the SIN-SYD A380 due to my parents being up there and spare seats available. a few minutes later some came up from economy.......so you never know your luck! all the best!

Though not sure which carrier you're referring to (I'd think Qantas, Cathay or Singapore), I have upgraded twice on board with Emirates (doesn't have PE). Both were paid upgrades (Y to J) though they also allow for upgrades using Skywards miles.

I have been upgraded from Economy and PE to Business on trans-Pacific flights. And more recently got upgraded from PE to First on Qantas to London. It's not uncommon for the CSM on-duty to take upgrades into their own hands.

|Yes, several over the years, from memory, on BA one was after take-off WTP>Club LHR-JFK, and before take off LHR-SYD, LHR-JFK & QF Biz>1st.

BA shifted me from PE to Business (BKK-SYD) when plane was ready to departure. Flight attendans came to me and said that "Due to technical reasons" they have to shift me. One glance on new boarding pass was enough to extinguish all possible complains. I have no clue why they choosed me - I do not have any status with BA (and ticket was booked through BA) and my status with QFF rather pedestrian. However I politely enquired about upgrade in London and in Bangkok. As they said - buy best possible ticket, travel alone, dress smart, be polite and be mid-aged to have the best chanses for upgrade.
Best of Luck
