Free Heathrow Express first class upgrade for Star Alliance Gold

Free Heathrow Express first class upgrade for Star Alliance Gold

Don't forget that Star Alliance Gold card on your next visit to London – it'll get you a free upgrade to first class on the Heathrow Express.

Okay, it's not exactly a long trip – the train darts between London's Heathrow Airport and Paddington in 15 minutes.

But instead of slumming it in the economy Express carriages you'll enjoy a bump into the swish Business First carriages at the front and rear of the train, with a little more legroom than 'economy plus wider seats in a more relaxed 1-1 layout, a personal table and an AC power socket at each seat.

You'd normally have to pay an extra £8 (A$16) pr trip for the privilege of being in the primo carriage, so by any measure you're ahead.

So how does it work?

Buy a standard class single or return ticket for the Heathrow Express, then sit yourself in a Business First carriage and show your train ticket and Star Alliance Gold card to the attendant.

And that's all there is to it.

The special promotion is open to all frequent flyers holding Gold status with any Star Alliance member airline – you don't even need to have flown into London with a Star Alliance airline – and runs from February 15 until further notice.

... and sit in the traffic for well over an hour!cChauffeur at LHR works great outside peak hours or if you're heading somewhere that would be a pain to get to via public transport, outside that and HEX wins.

On my last trip from London back to Sydney, I flew QF Business, and I did the get the hire car transfer.  But it took about 1.5 hours in the traffic.  Sure it was nice to get picked up, but I would have preferred that time in the lounge.

Many factors come into play really.

I used to live in Bayswater and to start with used to get the Heathrow express and a cab from Paddington to my place. But after a while I started to use a mini-cab service and found it overall a better service.

Most times it was just as quick, cost wise more expensive if just me, about on par if I had the wife with me, but so much more convientant.
