Qantas Points Club sweetens the pot with extra perks

Qantas Points Club sweetens the pot with extra perks

Qantas is adding $200 of vouchers, bonus frequent flyers points and Double Status Credits offers to its Points Club program in an effort to bring more members into the fold.

The Points Club was launched in March 2020 as both an offshoot of and a complement to the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme, with its focus on people who earn most of their Qantas Points on the ground – typically with much tapping and swiping of a Qantas credit card – rather than in the air.

(Points Club membership comes through earning 150,000 Qantas Points in a single membership year, with 350,000 Qantas Points lobbing you into the Points Club Plus tier.)

Two years on, with COVID putting a crimp in travel, those ‘frequent buyers’ have become more active than ever before.

Qantas is today rolling out a raft of new boosters to the Points Club and Points Club Plus tiers, headlined by the promise of “access to exclusive flying benefits such as Double Status Credit offers.”

That one actually kicks off today, with Points Club and Points Club Plus members able to claim a exclusive double serve of status credits on any Qantas flight within Australia or to New Zealand – although it’s only for bookings made until 11.59pm on Thursday May 20, for travel from May 22 to September 30.

A Qantas spokesperson has confirmed to Executive Traveller that this Double Status Credits offer extends to points-based Classic Flight Reward bookings.

Here’s a full list of the latest Points Club boosters:

New Qantas Points Club benefits

  • $50 Qantas Hotels voucher
  • $50 Qantas Wine birthday voucher (minimum spend $149)
  • Milestone Bonus Reward of 2,500 points for earning  250,000 eligible Qantas Points
  • Access to exclusive flying benefits such as Double Status Credit offers

New Qantas Points Club Plus benefits

  • $100 Qantas Hotels voucher
  • 2 x $50 Qantas Wine birthday vouchers (minimum spend $149)
  • Milestone Bonus Reward of 2,500 points for earning  250,000 eligible Qantas Points
  • Access to exclusive flying benefits such as Double Status Credit offers

Those come on top of other long-standing benefits such as Qantas Club lounge access, complimentary Qantas Wine Premium membership and bonus points for Qantas Hotels bookings.

“Over the past 12 months members have accelerated their balances, earning an average of 160,000 points from non-flying activities,” recounts Qantas Loyalty CEO Olivia Wirth.

“Around two-thirds of Qantas Points are earned on non-flying activity so the potential to build large points balances on the ground is huge.”

“In recognition of the growing number of frequent buyers in the program, we’ve added even more travel and lifestyle perks to reward their loyalty.”

Many Gold and Platinum-grade members easily qualify for Points Club membership and are especially fond of the ability to earn status credits on points-based Qantas Classic Flight Rewards bookings.

However, some deliberately hold back on hitting the 350,000 Qantas Points threshold and moving up to Points Club Plus because they’ve no need for that tier’s complimentary Qantas Club membership, given that lounge access is already covered by their existing Qantas Frequent Flyer status.

It’s been suggested that the Points Club Plus tier’s complimentary Qantas Club membership should be transferrable, allowing a Points Club Plus member to gift it to family, friends or colleagues.

A Platinum One-grade frequent flyer and Points Club member has also suggested to Executive Traveller that Points Club Plus members who earn double the tier threshold – 700,000 points in a single year – should be able to gift Points Club membership to a nominated family member.

As previously reported, Qantas has also considered adding a tier above Points Club Plus with benefits such as complimentary Business Lounge membership and four invitations per year to Qantas First Class lounges.

However, the criteria for entry could be as high as one million frequent flyer points, according to a survey sent to some of the airline's Points Club members and shared by one Executive Traveller reader.

Points Club is just noise imo. Not complaining about Status Credits on points bookings but apart from that...

As a not particularly frequent flyer these days (slipped back to lifetime silver) the Qantas Club membership will come in handy given the few flights I expect to take.

Double Status Credit offers is a nice perk. Sadly, I don't think I'll be getting Points Club for a while. Hopefully they keep on doing DSC offers that are open to everyone.

I've got Points Club Plus.. and i've literally seen no beenfit from it that I didn't already have with my Gold Membership and that in itself is the issue - why bother when there's no difference or additional benefits. The above changes are a good start.. but more is needed.

Also, maybe I missed it but do those benefits above apply to current members or only the next time you hit/renew?

The Points Club proposition is really a mixed bag. the basic Points Club is nice enough and easy enough to reach for a lot of people including very very infrequent flyers, although I know a lot of Golds who hold Points Club membership for the ability to earn status credits on reward bookings plus the Qantas Wine perks. But Points Club Plus sort of crosses over into Qantas Club and Qantas Gold territory, and I agree that the Qantas Club membership should be transferable to somebody else.

For Gold, Platinum and above members, the Points Club really offers nothing. The double status credit is a very limited perk, considering it's only available for 48 hours and for travel to the end of September.

I know many Golds who are Points Club members because they earn status credits on award bookings. As to this 'limited' DSC offer, this is the first DSC perk, there would will be more to follow. Points Club Plus is the harder sell for Golds or Platinums because they don't need the free Qantas Club membership and they can't do anything with it, eg give it away.

Normally when DSC offers arise, you need to register. I'm in the points club but haven't received any notification about the promo, and there is nothing mentioned on Bit dubious about booking without any confirmation? Anyone else in this situation?

I received an email from QFF about this at 9am this morning, "Introducing the new Points Club", and I'm not even a Points Club member. Maybe just log into your QFF account and see if there's any promotion for this on the landing page.

Thanks, appreciate it. When I log in to My Account > My Points Club, it just lists all the benefits, including the following, but no current offers listed. Hopefully by tomorrow this will change!

My email says the only criteria is to include your FF number on the booking, and Qantas take care of the rest. No need or possibility to register.
