Well, my magical airfare search (matrix.itasoftware.com, searching flights SYD-PAR) says that you could fly China Southern in December for $1,128 return.

Does that sound OK to you?

Way to be condescending...

I meant that generally overall, what is the cheapest carrier now that AirAsiaX is gone? I mean not on specific dates, just generally.

Well, as with all travel, who is "cheapest" depends on when you're flying -- for example, quite often Jetstar can be more expensive than Qantas for similar flights.

So basically the dates are an important question.  In December, the cheapest airline that I could find from Sydney to Paris, by quite some margin, was China Southern.

Consider Sydney to KL via AirAsia X. Then KL to Paris via Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, KLM, Air France.

Do some comparison between those airlines.

Syd - KL expect about AUD 600 return, then book those airlines in MYR, and do the conversion to AUD. Great rate at the moment :) Happy travels.

Probs China Southern . But not worth the hassle of flying China Southern. Rather pay more for Singapore

All airlines charge by demand and so did Airasiax. I find Vietnam Aitlines to be pretty consistant and good service to and from Paris after all it used to be a French colony Garuda has great deals at the moment to Amsterda and 79euros return on high speed train to Paris or same fare Frankfurt to Paris. Rather than go through De Gaul in fact the train fare is to anywhere in France

Do not bother with the Chinese airlines. They are terrible. They will suck you in with the low fares, then you will get bad entertainment system, lost luggage, etc. A cheap option, with a western airline is Qantas to HKG, or Malaysian to KL, then KLM from there to AMS, and then KLM Cityhopper from AMS to CDG.

I have flown with them on this route, great price, great service, one thing is that I had to wait 3 hours in HKG
