The 787 IFE is equipped with the two pin headphones like on many aircraft HOWEVER the headphones supplied by JQ are standard headphones (single pin) with an adapter. To use your own headphones simply unplug the JQ ones and plug in your own. Of coarse this adapter isn't great quality but it'll be good enough to hear the sound clearly. Went on the 787 MEL-DPS and this was what I did. Remember that you will need to pay to activate the full IFE if you dont there are only VERY  limited choices (4 fishing shows and a few radio stations) Enjoy the flight!!!

I have found that with all aircraft I have been on you can use your own.  Insert the aux half way into one of the two/three holes and it should play out of both of your own headphones...

From memory it was.about $20. I booked through a travel agent but I think you can do it online or onboard.
