Soft landings with QFF and VA Velocity programs - Supposing you are a certain tier with each program (Eg gold or platinum), and in one year you don't get even close to the number of status credits to maintain your status. Do QF and VA both grant soft landings down to the next tier level (Ie. platinum down to gold, gold down to silver)?
In my case, I've put all my travels this year into VA and I'll be getting Platinum with them soon. But my QF travel has been fairly lacking (only accrued 100 odd status credits) and my renewal date for Platinum is due soon (and the chance of getting 1200 SC in that period is zilch). I'm hoping it's a soft land down to Gold so I can still use the Qantas Club.... :)

In regards to Qantas, I've never experienced or heard of anything but a soft landing. I.e. dropping gradually from Platinum One to Platinum to Gold to Silver to Bronze. Unless of course you regain or retain a higher status. Often they throw in an incentive to regain/retain by offering double (or 50% more) status credits during a certain time of booking and/or travelling.
Can't help you in relation to Virgin though I'm afraid as I'm not a Velocity member.

Velocity is defitnitely the same!!! Soft Landings all round. I know there are cases (probably with QF too) that if you get close to retaining but fall just short SOMETIMES they top you up... im talking if you are like 50 short or something less.

Thanks for the replies. Qantas keeps sending me these 50% bonus SC offers - but even with that, there's a lot of flying to retain Platinum status.

Gian & Trevor are pretty much on the money re the Qantas program, you'll slide from Platinum to Gold - it's happened to me once or twice over the years.
In relation to falling short of the required SC's - Gian's note is per my experience. You might be half a dozen sectors off the required number and find they keep you in the higher tier - loyalty is a two way street!
