Weren't they simply going to "space" and back to where they started? A scenic flight of sorts?

Back to earth...with a thud.
Unless Matthew McConaughey managed to communicate in morse code, from the 5th dimension, to the engineers at Virgin giving them the formula for escaping Earth's gravitational pull efficiently...Pffft....

The one that crashed was a drop-test.
The plan for the final product (if it still gets built) is simply to go straight up and come down again. So the destination is just a tiny bit of space which happens to be about 160km above New Mexico. The SpaceshipTwo is nowhere near capable of even achieving orbit, which involves a helluva push sideways in conjunction with a small push upwards.
The name "Galactic" is, of course, ridiculous overreach. It's as if Virgin Atlantic involved wading up to your ankles in the beach at Portsmouth.
