It was rumored some time ago that Qantas would be running some domestic 787 routes for a brief time. Any news on if/when these can be booked on Qantas.com ?

Nothings been announced yet but like the Jetstar 787 I'd expect it appearing online around 1 month before the proving flights.

Nothing has been officially announced, but we've been told to expect a heavy domestic workout for the Qantas Boeing 787 in November, with the red-tailed Dreamliner doing plenty of flying – with a special focus on markets connecting to Perth for the PER-LHR services, which means that Adelaide should get a look-in alongside the more obvious candidates of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
However, the caveats will likely be that you might not have a lot of advance notice as to which flights will be earmarked for the Dreamliner, and of course a substitution of aircraft can happen, so your flight could revert back to being an A330.

It would be nice if on one day the Canberra Perth flight was on the list as well as that is the other target city with a very nice London Perth Canberra connection coming back. Not so good going though.

I know the 787 is a terrific aircraft but 1:1 it's down the same aisle as an A330 (pardon the pun) in terms of size and layout. I suspect if QF had announced A330 flights to U.K. or the US there would be outrage on social media sites about it being a domestic/medium haul aircraft. I couldn't imagine flying to UK or US in anything below 777 in size and not feeling so clostrophobic, am I the only one?

I think the 787 and A350's make them look really bad. Granted the A330 gap isn't as big to these new gen aircraft, but we all like new and shinny things (except 747's - they are special)
I have only done one 787 flight and agree they are a bit over hyped, especially compared to the A350 and also considering Q are getting them so late against their original schedule, but the mass public have probably forgotten that so it is all about novelty
(To be fair that 787 was JAL and the seats are not good for my 195cm length - though I have one booked Qatar in Dec so I can see again)

ADL got quite the workout back in 09 with the QF A388 so I would expect to see the 787

Something else we'll be reporting on, as the domestic Dreamliner flights draw nearer, will be how premium economy seats will be assigned. The Qantas' booking system only provides for business and economy class on domestic flights, so we expect to see the premium economy cabin initially shown only to the likes of Chairman's Lounge members and Platinum One frequent flyers booked in economy (similar to how for example row 4 on a domestic Boeing 737 is treated) and then be available to other selected passengers closer to the actual flying date.
