We're transiting Jakarta for 24 hours in August and September on the way to/from Europe and staying at a near-airport hotel. I see from the Indonesian Embassy website we don't need a visa; does that just mean we go straight to immigration and get a Visa Exemption Stamp in our passports on arrival?

You need to fill-in a visa waiver form on arrival, once you have your luggage, but before you get to immigration.

Also, a great airport transit hotel is the Bandara International Hotel by Accor. It's a slightly shabby old Sheraton that's right beside the airport that has a wonderful atmosphere and is surprisingly quiet. The food's great, the staff friendly and the rooms ice-cold with excellent beds. Highly recommended!
