Cancelled an Award flight 1m+ ago. Had nothing come through points or $ for taxes/fees so called up using the "special number" and got through <10mins..advised refund was not prompted in system and they would send request to refund team to process which could take 8wks. Hearing that I politely advised I done what was required of me cancelled online and not through call centre it wasn't my fault I would have to wait up to 3mths for my refund. They apologised and advised would put request for immediate refund. This was the same problem I had with an award booking 1yr ago which is why I was sceptical and called up.

My question to community - is this the common experience with QF refunds? Do we actually have to chase this up each time? I cancelled Virgin award booking last year and not only did I get through call centre right away refund was processed <3days. I get QF is in a bad situation and losing money but is it their strategy to hold onto as much money in as possible?

I've cancelled a number of Classic Reward bookings in recent weeks. Points are now being refunded within minutes, an hour at most, and taxes are being refunded within 6 days.

If the flight was on a partner airline then the refund process will be much slower.

Good to know as it was seriously putting me off from booking flex flights with Qantas. For info my booking were QF flights.

There is something wrong with their refunds process. Some refunds only take a few weeks, some take several months. I've experienced both and have not been able to work out a pattern.

I expect the worst from Qantas now so I only make a booking when I am absolutely sure I won't need to make changes.

After my last experience, got tired of waiting after fifteen weeks, so ended up doing a credit card charge back through American Express.
