Agreed, my wife actually prefers the 2-2-2 layout, as we get to interact and enjoy each other's company more throughout the flight. Only thing I will add is - yes, you can buy Airpoints Dollars, with one credit card in NZ (KiwiBank). But only worth it for small top-ups, or for partner redemptions.

Also depends on whether you’re from AU or NZ. If you’re from NZ, you can take out a Kiwibank-issued Airpoints Mastercard, and then buy Airpoints Dollars for $1 NZD each. That way, you can always top up to bridge the gap between how many APD you have and the base fare.
