Cathay Pacific: direct flights from Adelaide, Cairns to Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific will launch direct flights between Adelaide and Cairns and Hong Kong next year, while shifting all inbound Melbourne and Brisbane flights to non-stop status.

The airline's new schedule, which is slated to take effect from March 30th 2014, will no longer see Adelaide-HK flights routed via Melbourne, or Cairns-HL services via Brisbane.

However, flights between Adelaide and Hong Kong will be scaled back to four direct flights per week, rather than the daily service via Melbourne, although the airlines expects the non-stop flights will increase the number of available seats by 14 per cent.

"While the timing of the flights is subject to confirmation, Cathay Pacific intends to improve connection times and increase the number of short same day connections including to China from Adelaide", the airline says.

There will also be four direct Cairns-Hong Kong flights per week times for "great connections to and from mainland China as well as across Asia, Europe and the Indian subcontinent", although an additional four flights from Brisbane will continue to stop in Cairns.

Brisbane will also see a re-timing of its daily CX146 service to Hong Kong, with departure shifting to 1am (!) to reach Hong Kong at 7.45am (compared to the current 10.55am / 5.55pm schedule).

As of March 30th next year, all of Cathay’s thrice-daily flights from Hong Long to Melbourne will be non-stop.

"As of March 30th next year, all of Cathay’s 21 weekly Melbourne flights will be non-stop to Hong Kong."

I think this is badly worded as all flights from Melbourne to HKG are currently non-stop. You mean to say all flights to Melbourne from HKG will be non-stop.

It looks like CX 146's schedule is shifting to the schedule that CX 156 (00:55 - 07:45 during Australian summers) currently owns. What is going to happen to the CX 103 return flight and all the other Brisbane flights then?

CX 174 seems to depart really early for Hong Kong travelers.

Thanks for the article though.

Thanks fo the info - any chance of a clarification. Much is ambiguous.

There are currently daily flights between CNS and HKG which run in a triangle via BNE, but the rotation varies - thus 3 direct HKG-CNS and 4 via BNE - with 4 direct CNS to HKG and 3 via BNE.

So CNS from the new timetable swill ee 8 flights per week? You state four will be direct, but then say another four from BNE will stop in CNS - doesn't that make 8 direct flights a week from CNS to HKG?!

And what about the HKG-CNS direction?

Or are you referring to the route pattern - 4 flights a week will travel HKG-CNS-HKG and 4 flights a week will travel in the HKG-BNE-CNS circuit?

I realise you are probably simply quoting the material provided by CX, but this material in unclear.

Hi PLATY - agreed, trying to explain the dropping of the triangles and this could indeed be clearer. Editing in progress. But yes, all flights to and from Cairns will be direct.

Hi David,

I think that CX 146 overlaps CX 156's schedule which isn't ideal. Am I right, or am I wrong? (00:55 - 07:45)

Thanks, David, very much appreciated.

Thanks again for the interesting article. This is significant news for those of us based in CNS!

Sorry i'm confused with HL and HK (in inital) ...and also Hong Long and Hong Kong (in full name).
