It's been a year!
On July 10, 2023, our excellent Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, the Hon. Catherine King MP, officially signed a document formally rejecting Qatar Airways' request for an unprecedented 28 extra flights into SYD, MEL, BNE and PER, and also triggered an overblown and disproportionate sh*tstorm from people who love to suck on Qatar, including that ridiculous Senate Inquiry.
These decisions at the end of the day are good for Australia in the long-term. It protects the country from job losses and reduced profits. Reduced profits in Qantas (or Qantas losses) are bad for our wealth as Qantas profits stay right here in Australia. If there is less Qantas profit, there is less wealth in our great nation. Airfares are already coming down significantly in 2024, so that's not a problem as well. So many Australian jobs have been protected in the past year. Qantas is now able to bounce back stronger than ever before due to less Qatar flights. For example, Qantas is returning to Paris on Thursday for the first time in 20 years! But we need this to continue.
It's not like other countries do this as well. In fact most countries protect their local carriers. Why can't you fly Emirates into Berlin, for example? It's the same reason!
So happy Qatar Airways rejection day, everyone. Let's hope their new application is also met with a sensational rejection. Qatar is free to fly into Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart and the Gold Coast whenever they want - they are choosing not to. Qatar can fly there instead.

Airfares have already fallen a lot since then. So that's not a problem.
So happy Qatar Airways rejection day, everyone.

Which Australian jobs were protected?
Qantas has outsourced a lot of their workforce as well as fired a lot of their baggage handlers so they could get third party contractors to perform the job.

Air fares fallen.... Which planet are you living on? J class fares with QR are even more expensive than they were prior to this debacle. They sure took Australians for a ride.

Does anyone know why Qatar has not applied again in the year since the denial? Surely, given how much negative publicity the government received last time for the denial, they wouldn't dare deny again? The new Qantas CEO could even obtain such easy, much-needed positive publicity by publicly stating that, in the spirit of competition and the consumer, they have no objection to Qatar's application.
Qatar could even do a social media campaign about it - "we want to fly even more of you to your dream destination - help us lower fares to Europe by supporting our application" etc. Get a friendly faced Aussie in their Australia PR team to do a media blitz explaining why its better for travellers, pointing out Qantas don't fly to Qatar, and only a handful of destinations in Europe vs Qatars massive network, Singapore Air and Emirates etc have way more flights to Australia - "you can even earn Qantas points and status credits flying Qatar'
I'm baffled as to why they haven't applied again. Not enough aircraft? Think of the tens of thousands of Australians jetting off to Europe this summer that would have flown Qatar if there was more availability...

And no, Qatar has indeed applied again. It’s the same application as last time. And the government should reject them again. If they approve them they’ll face even tougher questions. Do you really think our government should be bullied by the Qatar Government’s manifesto? Do you work for Qatar Airways by any chance?

I assume these supposed protected jobs you refer to are the cabin crew from Asia and NZ paid way under Australian minimum wage and the outsourced baggage staff employed on a casual basis and forced to work split shifts. QF has not employed cabin crew on a direct basis since 2009 so you're kidding yourself if you think they care about AU staff.
Lets hope Qatar apply for more rights and get them approved. It's unlikely the government want to burn any more political capital on Qantas. The public's opinion of the business' management is rock-bottom so there is no political gain in looking after them.

I would agree with sentiments of OP if..... If QF would fly to enough destination from enough cities in Australia. But matter of fact is QF does not fly from Adelaide to overseas AT ALL. So rejection is "good" for Australia (in fact you do not know where profit goes), but it not that good for people who cannot fly QF without by-passing Sydney Airport. Another thing is number of flight. Say MEL-HKG where QF has only one flight while CX has 3 and one can choose day or night flight depending on his/her needs.
