Korean Air's new First Class lounge at Incheon puts privacy first

Korean Air has pulled back the curtain on a completely rebuilt First Class lounge at Incheon International Airport's Terminal 2, and it's a significant step up from what came before.

The lounge opens tomorrow (April 17) as the final piece of a 42-month, KRW 110 billion (~A$105m) overhaul of the airline's entire lounge network at the airport.

At 921 square metres, the new First Class lounge is more than double the size of its predecessor. The additional space houses 11 private suites alongside an open hall, giving first class passengers the option to disappear entirely before their flight.

The design takes cues from traditional Korean architecture. Wood pillars and beams frame the space, and ramie (mosi) textures run through the interiors.

On arrival, passengers are guided directly to their own suite rather than left to find a seat in an open room. It's a format that owes more to a private members' club than a typical airline lounge.

Fine dining and a curated art collection

Meals are served à la carte from a menu built around traditional Korean recipes and natural flavours.

Korean Air has commissioned custom tableware from two notable Korean artisans - white porcelain by Lee Ki-jo and traditional brassware by Lee Hyung-geun. This is paired with Christofle cutlery, Bernardaud porcelain, and glassware from both Baccarat and Riedel.

The lounge doubles as a curated gallery. Works by Anish Kapoor sit alongside pieces from Korean artists Kim Young-joo, Lee Bae, Yoo Bong-sang, and Chae Sung-pil.

The collection is anchored in traditional Korean tones of yellow and black, a deliberate contrast to the white-and-beige palette that dominates most premium airport lounges.

A wellness zone rounds out the facilities with massage chairs and shower suites, each with a separate powder room and private shower booth.

A complete lounge renewal at Incheon

The First Class lounge is the last to open in a broader expansion that has more than doubled Korean Air's lounge footprint at Incheon Terminal 2, from 5,105 to 12,270 square metres.

Total seating has jumped from 898 to 1,566 across seven lounges: First Class, Miler Club, Prestige East Left, Prestige East Right, Prestige West, Prestige Garden East, and Prestige Garden West. The Prestige West lounge also opens today.

The capacity boost isn't just about comfort. Korean Air is preparing for the integration of Asiana Airlines, which will funnel additional premium passengers through Incheon.

The airline has also added a lounge reservation feature through its website and mobile app, a practical touch that should help manage demand at peak times.

Korean Air says the infrastructure push will continue beyond Incheon, with upgrades planned at Gimpo International Airport and New York JFK.
