Virgin doubles down on Sydney-Doha flights

Virgin Australia is adding a second daily flight between Sydney and Doha, alongside the current daily service of Qatar Airways.

The move will see the number of Sydney-Doha flights equal to the Sydney-Dubai flights of Qatar’s arch-rival Emirates.

It will also help compensate for Qatar Airways’ decision not to bring back its daily Airbus A380 onto this flagship Australian route.

Like its VA1 counterpart, this new VA3 service will operate on a Boeing 777 leased from partner and investor Qatar Airways; the Gulf carrier will also supply the pilots, crew, catering and pretty much everything else.

These Virgin Australia flights are 100% a Qatar Airways experience.

Review: Virgin Australia 777 business class to Doha

That means the solid business class Qsuites and free superfast Starlink Wi-Fi are part of the premium travel proposition.

VA3/VA4 will run from 7 December 2026 through to 28 March 2027, yielding the following timetable:

  • VA1 departs Sydney at 3:50pm, reaching Doha at 10:40pm
  • VA3 departs Sydney at 9:10pm, reaching Doha at 4am
  • QR909 departs Sydney at 9:40am, reaching Doha at 4:30am

Of course, VA1 and VA3 are also available to book through the Qatar Airways website under a QR codeshare, with the reverse applying to Qatar’s own QR909.

There's plenty to love about Qatar Airways' 777 Qsuite business class.

While Qatar Airways previously planned to swing the A380 superjumbo onto Sydney-Doha in September 2026, the airline will now continue flying its Boeing 777 through to 2027.

Virgin says its expanded Sydney schedule will coincide with the return of services between Brisbane and Doha (VA15/16) and Perth and Doha (VA21/22), which will resume from 8 and 9 December 2026 respectively.

Melbourne will also see an effective boost in Doha flights from December, with its current QR and VA flights being accompanied by third Qatar 777 four days a week on a rebooted Canberra-Melbourne-Doha service.

These will run as an extension of Melbourne’s current QR988/QR989 services, with the 18-hour trek being broken up by a 2½-hour Melbourne stopover in both directions.

The Oneworld member is expected to make these daily flights from late March 2027.
