I find its cheaper in the long run just to pay cash with another airline. QFF has done a good job of making people pay the higher QF fares in the vague hope of one day getting a business class seat (often to a place you didn't actually want to go).

I assume the combined fare was the cheapest option, so I don't understand the complaint about less points. You won, got the cheapest airfare by combining carriers.
