It is interesting notice about separate booking – you would not think so would you? Why they vary? And why tickets prices vary? And why it cost more to flight MEL-LHR-MEL than LHR-MEL-LHR? Answer the same – they can screw us, so they do. It is not the biggest grief in my books – I can (as least theoretically) reject flying at all. Lets now talk about city councils rates.

I would suggest it has much less to do with the "taxes" and much more to do with the "charges." Taxes don't vary, whilst the airlines themselves are free to charge you "Up the Ying Yang."

I notice it mostly with fuel surcharges,QF add it to everything including award tickets and they are some of the highest in the industry..And while most airlines charge this fee ... most by distance/sector traveled are cheaper. There are a number of carriers that do not have any fuel based fees on their tickets especially award tickets. Some carriers also have openly said they factor the charges directly into the ticket price and you would never as the customer or be aware of the actual breakdown.
