Not sure if anyone can help, looking to travel SYD to JFK via HNL and on the return leg spend a few days in HNL. If I flew Virgin could I purchase a delta sky club 30 day membership and have access to the Virgin and Delta lounges?

As per Delta's site -- http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/airport_information/delta_sky_club/sky_club_locations/index.jsp
You'd get access to Virgin's Domestic lounges in Australia, but no international lounges at SYD. To access the Delta lounges, you'd need to have either a Virgin Australia or Delta boarding pass.
The Virgin flights to HNL are operated by Hawaiian Airlines, so you'd not have access to the lounges.

I'd recommend looking at Hawaiian Airlines. They fly to mainland US via HNL from SYD and you can arrange a stopover. Not sure about access to lounges in HNL, but you would earn Velocity points.

I agree with ciaomucca.
Haven't flown Hawaiian, but they have A330 scheduled on that flight, so if you aren't going Business Class, the Economy seating appears quite roomy compared to other products between Australia and USA.
On the return leg, there is an overnight stopover required anyway, so it would make perfect sense to spend a few days.
