Using Qantas points for upgrades of QF bookings on Emirates

Hi,

Does anyone know what the minimum requirements are to upgrade QF booked economy flights on Emirates?

I've tried to upgrade Emirates flights a couple of times, both failures.
It wasn't until after the booking that I found out that the QF "sale" fare is probably the issue.

The responses that I have received from customer service have been a bit vague and confusing.

So can anyone please advise me - are there any QF booked Emirates flights that are eligible for upgrades to business?
Either by points, or points+pay ?
If I choose a "saver" instead of "sale", can I then use QF FF points to upgrade?
What if I buy "flex"?
Or is the issue that Emirates just don't allow upgrades?
What if you are QF Gold - does that allow you to upgrade?

I currently only use the QF FF program, but I am wondering if it time to swap.

I most frequently travel domestically, and to Portugal.
My partner and I prefer to fly Emirates to Portugal, because of their direct service.
My partner flies Qantas domestically for work, so it makes sense to focus on QF FF.

I generally don't fly full fare business for work, unless it is for short haul, as I can't justify the price. But I like to upgrade.
QF Classic business rewards for flights to Europe in summer on Emirates are just too hard to get.

I'd like to keep flying Emirates through the QF FF program, but the upgrade rules are confusing and frustrating me!

You are not able to use QFF points to upgrade on EK.

you can only use emirates miles to upgrade on emirates flights - and qantas points on qantas - so if you are not earning emirates points as not a member and have them as qantas you are limited to qf operated flights only - i faced the same dilemna - but book emirates and collect miles for international flights as convenient for us too - and then use QF domestic - sorry

Thanks drsimon.

I've been reluctant to book through my Skyward membership as I've heard that Skyward make it more difficult to redeem rewards with partner airlines - not to mention they are not OneWorld - so the lack of flexibility makes using Skyward seem a bit unappealing to me... oh well.

I might need to dust off my TAP Portugal membership and do some research into how flexible/useful that is ...

i rarely have problem with upgrade when asking - but i always fly international paid business and try to use points for up to first - have never flown emirates economy and tried upgrading to business so cant comment on that but always generally OK to get first upgrade (but then i do live in adelaide so that might factor)

There are only two things to remember about Qantas upgrades: (1) you can only upgrade on a QF flight number and (2) only if you're flying an actual Qantas plane.

Another useful tidbit is when you book some Qantas Economy fares, they can't be upgraded. It depends on what booking class the Economy fare is in. And the EASY way to remember is the mantra "Not On Qantas Ever". N O Q E. These are the Economy booking classes from which you cannot upgrade using points. N class, O class, Q class and E class.

Thanks... that is actually a good way to remember :)

I always get confused by the various labels each carrier puts on their fares
