I have an upcoming flight MEL-DXB-LHR on Emirates A380, but booked via QF as a QF codeshare. I fly this route regularly and never previously bothered using onboard EK wifi, but planning to test it out on upcoming trip with some basic emails. Looking at EK website it appears that all non-Skywards members (including F & J) have to pay for wifi, but Skywards members get at least 20MB free. I am a QFF Plat1 flying QF codeshare ticket in F, what are my options?
Obviously don't want to add a basic (blue) EK Skywards member number to my QF booking otherwise that will screw with my status credits bonus points etc via QFF, but from what I can see QFF Plat1 flying codeshare on EK metal in F doesn't get any wifi allowance?
Only option I see is to log in with a blue Skywards membership for first 20MB free, then pay discounted rate from there on. Given the EK/QF alliance, it seems a bit of an imbalance that Skywards members in Business & First get unlimited data onboard, but I don't get any for free because if booked via QF codeshare.
Any suggestions of a workaround appreciated, as last time I asked the cabin crew on EK how to access the onboard wifi as a QFF I got a dismissive shrug of the shoulders. Not being precious about it, but thought I might have got a better outcome in First.
It depends on how much you need it. A few basic emails come in with the free amount. If it was added to the first ticket price you wouldn’t notice it. The reasons Airlines give their own some privileges is exactly that. If it wasn’t in the QF/EK agreement then it won’t happen. Maybe in five years at the time of the next agreement.

However to get unlimited data you have to have used a Skywards account to make the booking (submitted in before the flight), i.e. earnings points on skywards not QFF. So I couldn't have unlimited data because I was earning QFF points.
The wifi is excruciatingly slow. Forget about using your laptop. Your phone will work for the most basic of email, and messaging (eg Whatsapp). On a recent EK flight (Sydney to Dubai) I paid for 500MB and used about 30MB all up. Not because I only to use it a little bit, but because literally nothing would load.

Same story with me, when there is 300+ people on an a380 having free access (60 people concurrently using when I tried) it becomes painfully slow.

Function of satellite coverage over water - average at best. One of the reason QF has held off for the next generation of satellites

Thanks for the field reports, travelling EK J (booked as QF code share) shortly and was wondering... I guess now at least I have low expectations...
