It depends on how much you need it. A few basic emails come in with the free amount. If it was added to the first ticket price you wouldn’t notice it. The reasons Airlines give their own some privileges is exactly that. If it wasn’t in the QF/EK agreement then it won’t happen. Maybe in five years at the time of the next agreement.

Just flew Qf codeshare in J, all passengers in business and Y get 20MB free, no skywards required. However to get unlimited data you have to have used a Skywards account to make the booking (submitted in before the flight), i.e. earnings points on skywards not QFF. So I couldn't have unlimited data because I was earning QFF points.

The wifi is excruciatingly slow. Forget about using your laptop. Your phone will work for the most basic of email, and messaging (eg Whatsapp). On a recent EK flight (Sydney to Dubai) I paid for 500MB and used about 30MB all up. Not because I only to use it a little bit, but because literally nothing would load.
Same story with me, when there is 300+ people on an a380 having free access (60 people concurrently using when I tried) it becomes painfully slow.

Function of satellite coverage over water - average at best. One of the reason QF has held off for the next generation of satellites

Thanks for the field reports, travelling EK J (booked as QF code share) shortly and was wondering... I guess now at least I have low expectations...
