I have to fly from Singapore to Brisbane and have a couple of days to spare so I thought I’d stop in PNG for a quick break. Air Niugini’s business class fares are priced much higher than I’m willing to pay (direct flight with Singapore would be cheaper, PAL and Malaysian also have cheaper options with better product).
So considering booking economy and just throwing in the minimum bid for an upgrade. Does anybody know what that is for the SIN-POM leg?

Hi Dredgy. If you bid a little higher than the minimum amount as suggested by Sid, you'll more than likely be successful. My success rate has been 7 out of 8 so far for that route, mostly SIN - POM which is a 'red-eye' flight where a fully flat bed is appreciated. But I've also had success in the opposite direction, which is a late afternoon flight. PX are a perfectly fine airline, all things considered, and their POM - SIN business class service is a lot more comfortable and on-time than most people (who've probably never flown them) would realize. And yes, their biz fares are a little steep as they're the only airline on that route, so usually I use points or cash bids to upgrade from economy. BTW: PX economy is just fine too for that 6 hour journey.

Thanks for all the info! Do you know roughly how much the minimum bid is?
The minimum amount you can bid to upgrade varies from flight to flight. So I can't tell what the minimum amount will be for your flight. Also, due mostly to covid, it's nearly three years since I last flew that route, and honestly I couldn't remember anyway. With 100+ flights a year, it all becomes a bit of a blur with me, unfortunately! So things may have changed.
Regardless of whatever the minimum amount was, I would usually bid $200 - $400. Sometimes if I felt a little unsure I'd go as high as $500. But whatever I end up paying was still much less than buying a biz class tkt outright. (Others may have had luck with lower bids, I don't know). One time my $100 bid for a POM - CNS upgrade was successful, but that is obviously a short route and not a good comparison for POM - SIN. Once you've made a booking, you should receive an email inviting you to bid at least a week before your flight. But if you don't receive one, go straight to your online booking and somewhere inside you should see a little icon (I think it's called 'PX Plus') indicating you can bid.

Suggest you look at Skytrax reviews before going with Air Niugini!

Your bid will often be successful by bidding just a little higher than the minimum.
