It all depends ,price or Quality like buying a car some can afford a Mercedes and others a holden ,I prefer Qantas as a successful buisiness man.Qantas has more lounges etc.some sales staff do not have a choice and fly with whom they a told .competition is good for buisiness

I prefer Qantas – flown few times with Virgin and still like Qantas more. Current business class madness is just madness and public stunt. No-one will win. For starter 4 hr flight quite bearable in descent recliner  - they would be better of put fully flat beds in Asia flights. Secondly someone may fool himself that because of competition we win. Rubbish – they cut costs elsewhere and service as whole will go down. Been here, done that. YMMV.

VA all the way. Where I live there is virtually no QF metal, only JQ rust which I totally refuse to fly.

A timely discussion starter Alvin thank you. Rather than just the usual partisan statements it would be good for some to back up why they prefer one carrier over the other. So here I go. Have flown VA on and off over the years but in the last 4 dedicated my strategy with QF and have easily attained Gold for the duration. However, I am now diversifying my strategy and as QF Gold is secure for another year I am building VA status domestically as an insurance policy for Intl travel. Over the past 4 days have flown VA with today by far the worst. Firstly FF programs are distorted, hype remains that VA's status thresholds are lower than QF however their earn is also lower TSV BNE QF Y class (any fare booking) 15 SC's VA 10. QF min 1000 guarantee VA 736 points. No vel club in Tsv, checkin today at BNE large que's no self bag drop, small number of self service kiosks and all being used. Ticket had wrong gate number as it had been changed however no announcement had been made as other passengers were still sitting at wrong gate before I had checked in. I asked counter staff at a gate whilst another passenger approached with a similiar issue. VA staff (who later proudly stated they had worked for QF) went to arrivals screen before I had to point out correct screen. Then told me that changes happen often due to ATC..... something I find hard to believe as this has only happend once in the 4 years I have been with QF ( yet they suffer the same ATC  controls at BNE) Virgin make more operational changes to suit profit per pax (has happened at Syd also). Only after I had made query and after the long trek from gate 38 to 44 (and then after an announcement had been made that boarding would commence shortly ) did they announce the gate change and then the poor pax from 38 made the trek and arrived. Service upon entry, enroute and disembarking QF far more professional and 'on task'. I'd say anyone who likes VA's J service either hasn't flown QF or isn't paying for VA J or both. From what I've seen very poor meal and drink offerings, I don't think the cabin itself is anything 'special' and the blue perspex and strap across the asile look tacky and something out of a cinema. I suppose I am also used to snacking at the club whilst enroute and the occasional drink offering (including bottled water) is something I enjoy having, or the option of, when with QF. I did add up the extras I paid for which altered the bottom line considerably of the similarly priced VA Y ticket on this trip compared to what I would have received for the same price with QF (this excludes me using the club). I think most VA detractors probably have had some issue with QF which they consider unresolveable, however all today did for me was confirm my total satisfaction in the QF brand. There is no comparison.

Prefer a Qantas Bar in Virgin Lounge. In economy, would like ability to purchase food in-flight (Virgin style) on Qantas than muster down some of their offerings. Other than that, i typically fly VA for Domestic and QF for International (and connections)
