HI All, has anyone else had this happen? and what can be done about it?
I recently flew QF - CNS/MEL (QF F/F - ex Silver due to illness) and requested a points upgrade when the booking was made from Red E deal to J class.
Even after checking status at CNS Check-in and at QF Club desk at apt.
Didn't receive it...!.
To my surprise, after takeoff, a walk through the J cabin, I spy 2 empty seats. On checking with the Cabin Manager, he confirmed he did have 2 empty seats and that I wasn't the only pax that did not receive the requested upgrade. There was 1 other.
Is Qantas now making so much profit that it doesn't need to sell ALL seats.. either for cash or points..?
Even if the empty seats were a result of "No Show", I thought an onboard upgrade would have been possible.
Wonder if "the Virgins" would be more supportive of loyalty?

I was told by someone at the airlines that catering is the main reason last minute upgrades don't happen, especially when flying from regional cities, it is frustrating though to see empty seats up the front when it occurs.
Thanks Patricka340 and GBRGB, looks like I'm a nobody until I build up more Status Cred. Next time, I think I'll take my own J class food and see if I can rule out the lack of catering...... he.. he...he..!

I just put through a request upgrade for my BNE-PER flight & it was processed immediately...I've never had confirmation prior to the day before travel previously (flight is in May) - has there been a change?
Prior to this last occasion, I travelled MEL/SYD/MEL in Nov 2016 and the points upgrade for both sectors was confirmed immediately. The difference.... I was a Silver F/F then. Status matters..
Fair enough - I've been Gold for years, but this is the first time I can recall it happening...happy surprise!

@Greg84 and @comm_cousin: The reason your domestic points upgrade confirmed immediately was because there was reward seat availability. For domestic flights, anyone (including Bronze members and those on the lowest fares) can get an instant confirmed upgrade if seats are available for reward bookings, and they have the required points.
The most likely reason your CNS-MEL flight was a request only was because there were no reward seats left. At that point, status and loyalty would come into play when clearing the waitlist, just like international flight upgrades.

One would think that coming from regional areas and being relatively short flights, not receiving a meal would be a small price to pay for the upgrade..

I am a veteran platinum and sat at the economy bulkhead staring at an empty PE section the entire way from LAX after a declined upgrade request. THAT is a kick in the loyalty gut!
