So I drop from WP on 1st March - unfortunately way off the mark with only 250 SCs this membership year (took reward flights instead of buying them) but I had 2500 SCs the previous year, so 2750 over a 2 year period.

The thing is, I'm on a J cabin RTW booked during the last DSC and on returning on 16th March will have 1600 SCs and be platinum again. So gold for just 15 days (although I do recognise the DSCs could take a bit longer to come through)

I was targeted for the offer of 120000 points to retain platinum for another year, but really this only buys me 2 weeks above what I will obtain anyway.

I really want to check out the first lounge in LAX but there is no first on the LAX BNE flight so an upgrade is not an option.

So I thought - Give Qantas a call and explain the situation, that I would have applied for an upgrade but there is no first cabin, I may have a sympathetic agent who will roll over my platinum seeing as I'm going to be back to platinum in 2 weeks anyway. (I know it's a long shot, but if you don't ask you'll never know).

Anyway, the reason for this post is that the agent I spoke to on Qantas premium told me a few things during our discussion that I'm not sure are factually correct and thought I'd seek the wisdom of the AusBT readership for clarification.

When it seemed that the request of rolling over platinum had been considered and denied (from an online request I submitted 2 weeks earlier -but I did not receive any notification of this decision) I mentioned to her that I had noted that the new Qantas platinum amex gives 2 complimentary invitations to the first lounge, and that I was previously unaware that first lounge invitations existed. (really the only reason I wanted to be platinum on this trip was to see the LAX first lounge) and I asked her if rather than requesting a roll over of platinum status it would be possible to receive a couple of these complimentary passes to the first lounge. On my outbound trip I've requested an upgrade to first so hopefully will access the lounge on the first part of the trip I'm only missing out on the home journey through LAX.

This is what she said to me:

The LAX first lounge does not accept complimentary invitations or passes as it is not a qantas owned lounge and is shared with AA and BA.

She then told me that the QF platinum AMEX doesn't give invitations, but that the card itself is the invitation, and that you have to show this at the lounge!

I thought I'd flag that for the readership here.

So there we go, I'm hopeful of a classic upgrade to F on the way out, but it doesn't seem likely that I'll get into the F lounge in LAX. I've never been through TBIT in LAX so at least the business lounge will be a new experience for me anyway.

The LAX first lounge DOES ACCEPT first class lounge passes however the LAX Business Lounge DOES NOT ACCEPT Qantas Club lounge passes

The QF Platnium AMEX does give 2 Qantas Club lounge passes for use at BUSINESS Lounges. The First Class lounge passes you are referring to are courtesy of the Qantas Premier Titanium.

I don't think you mean Platinum Amex? Are you actually referring to the new Qantas Titanium card?

In any case, I think the agent is wrong as to my knowledge, Qantas does own and operate the First lounge at LAX. It's the business lounge which has shared ownership with CX and BA. I doubt there is much knowledge in QF at the moment on this, as the access pass concept to First lounges is relatively new.

Also, you do have a "soft landing"... It's Gold.

....and your title is misleading. A soft landing is going from Paltinum to Gold which you received. A soft landing does not refer to your ability to get a comp or not.

Yeah, sorry. I was referring to the new QF titanium card. Just as a reference to the existence of first class lounge passes.

Thank you DJTech - a helpful, positive comment. Much appreciated. If only everyone was equally supportive of their fellow AusBT readers who aren't quite as knowledgable.

Lax first lounge is, to be honest, not a big deal. Nothing like Sydney and Melbourne in atmosphere.

Thanks Dave. Shame I didn’t get to P1 last year then. 2500. Just a bit short.

Does Platinum status grant you access to all domestic Business Lounges? The benefits page only lists east coast lounges, nothing for Perth?!

It does. Presumably an oversight where that page hasn't been updated.

No loss. The QF F lounge is more a business lounge. Poor, busy, crowded layout. Its really more a high end business lounge. Its def not at a Sydney Melbourne QF F Lounge standard!
