QantasLink Boeing 717s get new business class for Canberra

Although Qantas’ lie-flat A330 ‘business suites’ enjoyed the spotlight at today’s launch of the new seats, the Boeing 717 fleet of regional sibling QantasLink are also set for a spruice-up.

QantasLink will take up five new Boeing 717s to be introduced to the fleet "during FY14", says Qantas (which means sometime from mid-2014 to mid-2015) which will be dedicated to flying between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.

These will all include a new business class cabin and also be fitted with the Q Streaming wifi system with iPads supplied for each business and economy seat.

Qantas will also upgrade its other 13 all-economy Boeing 717s with new interiors.

They don't look that luxurious.

But that's okay, our pollies and senior public servants can go without. I don't mind.

Expect these to move onto the Hobart services replacing the 737's and the overnight Dash 8 next year. One of the pilot recruitment websites suggests a 717 base opening in HBA in 2014.

David, I've heard from one or two 717 pilots that the 717 economy class refits result in a much tighter squeeze - are you able to verify/refute this through your QF contacts?

Also, just out of interest, have QF specified the seat pitch for the 717 business class product?

Hi PLATY - I've got nothing to offer on either of those fronts.

Thanks, David, - no worries, just curious.

Interesting to see that the economy seats look very similar to what Lufthansa have introduced in their 'regional' economy class. I wonder how comfortable they'll be.

They're not seriously thinking of a black cabin, are they? I think Marc Newson needs to have a go at touching this up!
