[QF] Is it possible to name-change and cancel on one change-fee?

Hypothetical situation: I book and pay for a mate's flight, but he has to cancel. Is it possible to change the name to mine and then cancel the flight? Essentially, the goal is to cancel the flight I booked and paid for him, but have the credit after the cancellation/change fee held in my name.

I assume he's on a Red E-Deal. To do a name change, the fare will need to be upgraded to a flexi fare ($77 change fee + fare/tax difference on a flexi fare), and then do the name change ($80 fee). Then you can cancel and get it held in credit for no fee (because it's a flexi fare, but is non-refundable because it was purchased as a Red E-Deal).

Hmm. Thanks for that - very informative - but it means I'll need to come up with a different approach.
