I agree muzz.. And I think Alan Joyce said it well at his speech to the National Press Club last year on the future of the Qantas Group. In summary Australians love the idea of Qantas and having an iconic national carrier but in reality only 1 in 10 actually choose to fly QF when they head OS.

We are not actually prepared to pay more to fly and support the national carrier.  I do not blame anyone for that - I fly what ever offers the best value regardless of whats painted on the tail as well... and thats my 2 cents!

Exactly. Most people only care about the cheapest flights. (Or the best-value FFP.) Nobody actually gives a toss about how Australian the airlines are or aren't.

The problem is that Qantas is supposedly an Australian "icon" and "symbol" that "carries the flag", when the reality is that it is just another airline. Sure, it's got a long and rich history, but nowadays it is just another airline.

My view is simple. Qantas should be restructured to allow it to pull the same stunts that Virgin Australia can. If they want to run a 787-9 base out of SIN then let them. They're the Spirit of Australia, not the body. Let both carriers do whatever they damn well please. Let the competitive duopoly reign, but make sure it's a fair fight. Let them fight, but don't let them die.

Make it fair, make them duke it out. Let them fight, but don't let them die.

PS: For the record, I fly QF for my Asia travel based on their superior FFP (for my requirements, anyway), acceptable if less-than-ideal schedule, and acceptable price. At no point have I ever thought, 'I should fly Qantas because it's Australian.'
