Qantas upgrades for platinum members.

Hi guys. I will be departing lax in under 48 hours and have requested an upgrade from economy to business. I read the on the qantas website that it is "up to 48 hours prior to departure" for confirmed upgrades. I have been checking my booking for the last day or so for any changes to my current seat but as yet nothing has changed. There are still plenty of business seats available for qf18. Knowing my luck if I do get the upgrade they will shove me in the middle row of 3 when the preference would be seat A or K in the upper deck or nose. Could anyone who has had previously secured an upgrade please inform me on when you were notified and what seat would you recommend for the 747. Thanks

5 B, J is the best on the 744

My upgrades have been cleared anywhere from 48hrs to departure to literally as my boarding pass is being scanned to board the a/c, where I was issued with another b/p.

Like I always say, If I get a last minute upgrade to J from Y, I dont care where it is- as long as its business class!

I'm also a platty and flew LAX-MEL on the A380 last weekend - I hoped to hear confirmation of my upgrade request from PE to J 48 hours out, then at check in and, seeing 18 unallocated seats on EF whilst waiting in the lounge, hoped for it at boarding - I even checked at the service desk at the gate, no luck, I hope yours is better

I mean honestly, It really does amaze me how some airlines (particularly QF) would rather let the seat fly empty then clear a points upgrade for QF platinums. Countless times where I have failed to upgrade with points I have had a peak on the other side of the iron curtain only to see a half empty J cabin.

@jet_setter I didn't dare look through the curtain, figured I'd get too annoyed so decided to "presume" that all 18 seats were allocated in the couple of hours before boarding (I overlooked to check the loading nearer time).

18 unallocated seats and still no upgrade for a platinum member??? I must say thats some pretty poor form on QF's behalf. If you could not get upgraded from pe to business whilst being platinum then I do not hold out much hope. Were you flying alone or did you have a kardashian like entourage travelling with you? I will be travelling alone, not sure if that will make a difference or not.

@dls1976 no entourage but decided not to upset myself over it.  More points towards my trip to Europe in June, perhaps QF knew that was where I should be using them (if I can sort out flights).  I hope you were more successful.  PE is bearable, why not try for an upgrade from Y to PE perhaps?

@mberzkins. I locked in an exit row seat for this flight back in january of last year. The thought has crossed my mind to tick the pe upgrade box but whenever I compare an exit row economy seat to a standard pe seat I just justify parting with approx 40000 points for a seat with less legroom. Is there really a noticeable difference?

@dls1976 sorry to be so late in this thread, looked back to see if you got your upgrade (did you?) ..... tbh i've not flown in Y lately so I couldnt speak of the difference (leg room between an exit row in Y with a standard PE seat or otherwise) but, surely, it buzzes less with less people in the PE cabin than the huge cavernous Y cabin?  To stretch my legs, I've walked the length of the upper and lower decks of an A380 from J and and the noise that hit me as I came down the back stairs from PE to Y was overwhelming.  As you would expect I know but, I deduced, it was better upstairs on that flight.

I flew on a MEL- AUK QF flight recently and as a QFP1 member was not provided with a points upgrade. Also had a CC member sat next to me (yes they put him in the middle seat although the flight was not full!!!)....we could not both believe that only 2 of the 12 business seats (one by a QF staff member with a baby on holidays the crew told me) where being used and QF where not prepared to take our points and take the goodwill. When will WF get it?...time to try VA I think!!!

@Sparkymarky thats is unbelievable. I know roughly how much it takes to get one of those p1 cards of yours and for you not to get an upgrade with all those seats available is unexcusable. Perhaps they were worried if they upgrade you and the cc member then it might upset the baby hence the reason why you were not upgraded. Wont you think of the children.

Similar experience many times failing to upgrade as QF P with empty seats. There is no loyalty & I have decided to send greedy little joyce a message and fly Qatar and EY....both are better and FAAR cheaper.
