Qantas unveils new frequent flyer points calculator

Qantas unveils new frequent flyer points calculator

Qantas Frequent Flyer members can now determine exactly how many points and status credits they’ll earn with both Qantas and its partner airlines through a new online calculator.

Simply plug in your origin, destination, airline, travel date and Qantas Frequent Flyer status for an accurate quote:

On the side, you’ll also be shown what you could earn when travelling on a more expensive fare type, which is handy if the price difference is minimal.

It’s also easy to compare the earning rates for different airlines on the same route, which is particularly useful after Qantas’ status credit shake-up.

For example, just toggle across to British Airways…

… to see what you’d earn on BA16 from Sydney to London, as opposed to QF1:

As well as domestic flights, it also works on other routes such as Sydney-Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific…

… and, if you’re flying in business class from Australia but then onwards in first class on the longer leg to London Heathrow, you can add that in by clicking the ‘+’ button at the bottom:

It also works if you’re changing airlines and travel classes part way through the journey – such as flying with Qantas in premium economy to Dallas/Fort Worth, but then onwards to Boston in discount economy with American Airlines:

With AA, the ‘discount economy’ option shows what you’ll earn at half a point per mile, so if you’re flying in the even-cheaper O or Q ‘fare buckets’, you’ll need to halve the calculator's figure yourself to get the 0.25 points per mile rate.

All up, the tool works out what you’ll earn – including any applicable status bonuses – when flying with Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Malaysia Airlines, which is certainly more convenient than locating your particular flight on Qantas’ lengthy earning tables.

Other partner airlines, such as Qatar Airways, LAN Airlines and Fiji Airways aren’t yet available through the tool – but if you’re flying US Airways or Dragonair, we’d suggest clicking on AA or Cathay Pacific, respectively, as the earning rates are a near-match.

There's still no word on the revised partner airline earning rates under the revamped Qantas Frequent Flyer program, although the calculator's 'travel date' feature will no doubt make things easier to understand when these take effect.

You'll find the new earning tool on the Qantas website.

Looks sharp. I noticed that QF is upgrading its website bit by bit.

Is there going to be a new Using Points Calculator? The old one wasn't all that great.

Why not just improve in flight service instead of take, take, take, take each month.A calculator..really at a time when most all earn less status credits and points than ever.

Look, I'm not too impressed with QF's direction either, but can we stay in vaguely-relevant-land?

This article isn't even talking about in-flight service! You're the only one talking about in-flight service! Why are you talking about in-flight service?

Fear not, I'm sure there'll be an article about Qantas in-flight service coming up at some point in the not too distant future, and you can rant about it at that stage. Have fun!

(Personally I hardly ever fly Qantas.)

I like it! So much easier to figure out when flying on numerous flights and in different classes. Great work Qantas!

I noticed that you don't get any status point on EK flight to NZ regardless which class you take, is this normal or something wrong with the tool?

Right now, at the end of doing a booking, the number of points could be earned is shown. Would be better if SC is also shown as well, saving the time to check SC at another screen.

This is actually really helpful. Shows the difference between flying QF and CX

Always cringe when you guys write 'fare buckets'. No agents or airlines use that term, it's 'fare brackets'. Only people outside the industry call it that and it always incites a bit of vomit in the mouth.
